Bangladesh can earn huge foreign currency by exporting jute geo-textiles as the demand of the products is increasing gradually in the world market. We are developing jute geo-textile of international standard under the project titled development and application of potentially important jute geo-textile in the country which is almost complete said an official of Jute Diversification Promotion Centre (JDPC). Jute geo-textile is issued in controlling soil erosion of roadside, river bans and hillsides. The synthetic geo-textiles are harmful soil as they take long years perish.  Jute geo-textile is bio-degradable and does not spoil soil nutrients. At present the country export nearly 6000 to 7000 tons of jute geo textiles to various destinations including Australia and United State of America in recent years.

JUTE HITS BILLION DOLLAR JACKPOT AS EXPORTS CROSS $20 B MARK

Earnings from jute and jute products exports hit the billion dollar mark for the first time in the country’s history, propelling overall shipments in the first eleven months to $20.53 billions official figures showed. Exporters or raw jute rose 81% and jute goods 40% to take the shipment of the proverbial Golden Fiber to $1.03 billion a figure not seen even in the heyday of the cash-crop in the 1940s-70s. The year-on-year growth in May was over half a billion dollars in absolute term, or 48% more than the same months last year.

The Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) said the overall shipping grew a blistering 42 percent in the eleven months to May, as the shipments crossed $20 billion for the first time, on the back of booming apparel trade. This is for the first time in the country’s history that exports of jute and jute products reached one billion dollar. The country earned $725.56 million by exporting jute and jute products during July-May of the last fiscal year, when the natural fiber replaced frozen fish as the country’s second largest export item after apparel.

REVIEW OF EXPORTS

During July-February, 2010-11 country’s total export earnings amounted to Tk. 98,871.36 crore compared of TK.69,349.44 crore in the same period of last year showing increase of 42,51% of the total export earnings, raw jute and jute goods contributed Tk.5,586.20 crore or 5.64% while non-jute items earned Tk. 93,285.16 crore or 94.36%. During July-February 2010-2011 earnings from manufactured commodities stood Tk. 94,334.31 crore or 95.41% while earning from primary commodities reached at Tk.4537.05 crore or 4.58%.

STATE-RUN JUTE MILLS UNLIKELY TO BE PROFITABLE

Despite the country’s jute sector witnessing a revival in its fortune, the state-run jute mills are unlikely to be profitable mainly due to t heir age-old machinery and poor management. As age-old machinery in the jute mills cannot reduce quality jute goods and yarn, international buyers are expressing their dissatisfaction. It is feared that export of jute goods would decline soon, a high official of Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) said. He mentioned that there is a serious dearth of skilled manpower in the mills. The production cost of the state sector jute mills has gone up by 50% because of excess manpower. Modern management and modern technology in jute mills are to be there as soon as possible for raising the output and for earning more foreign exchange by exporting jute goods to foreign countries, the official said.

EXPORTS EXCEED TARGET

Exports soared 41.61% in the first 11 months of the current fiscal year, buoyed by appeal, compared to the same period a year earlier, according to Export Promotion Bureau. In the July-May period, Bangladesh exported goods worth $20.54 billion sur-passing the period’s $16.58 billion target. In May alone, country exported goods worth $2.30 billion, a 47.69% rise from the same month a year earlier. In May, the export exceeded the target by 34.26%.
